I run a vista 32 machine with 4 gigs. I have tried just about everything including running the machine in minmum and loading only windows and adobe CS5. I still get the error of "Could not fill because there is not enough memory (RAM)". I have tried playing with the performce settings and GL settings to give adobe as much memory as it needed but it is still not working.
I am working with a file that is 6.49mb which is the average of what my raw file convert to when I download them from my camera. Now the only way I can get it to work is seriously downgrade the file in size and then the content aware fill works great or decrease the area that is going to be filled.
So am I missing something or do I have to convert everything over to 64 bit and throw 8 gigs in this machine to get this to work with those tyoe of file sizes?
Thanks

Just a little update.
I had to degrade the file size down to 800 x 600 to get it to work which is ridiculous.I tried dropping file size down from 6.49mb to 3mb then to 1.8mb then to 971k and then to 400k and I still got the error. The 800x600 file size is about 97k where it works without a hitch. So content aware is pretty much useless since I cannot work with a 800x600 file unless I use alien skin to blow it back up to what I need be but I shouldn't have to.
So am I too assume you need a super computer to do content aware on a file under a meg. When I saw the demo of them taking away an entire road I was like cool but I wonder what the specs where on that laptop and it was probably running in 64 bit.

The solution to out of ram errors is to lower the Memory Usage from Edit->Preferences->Performance until you don't get that error anymore.

I'm in the same boat.
Win7 x86 with 4gb memory, plenty of free hd space.
Tried all the suggestions, no luck.

This usually fixes some laptop issues but not sure if it will with software or CS5. Shutdown the computer. Disconnect the external power if you have it hooked up. Take the laptop battery out and let it sit like that for about 60 seconds. Put the battery back in and start the laptop up by using the battery or external power. See if that cleared up the memory issue. Not sure if it will but worth a try.

The original install was on a Desktop and not on a laptop. I installed it on a laptop to see if it produces the same result and it does.

Same problem here. xp pro with 3.5GB (1.6 available to CS5).

So I think I have figured something out on this RAM msg issue that keeps popping up. The other machines I installed Photoshop were all AMD processor. I just did a install on another laptop with only 2 gigs of ram that has an Intel duo core processor and I used the same picture and it worked fine. I am going to one more install on a friends Intel laptop and see if I get the same results.
The people who are having problems like me do you have a AMD processor?

The CAF engineers are looking into this.
If you find other details (heck, I'll even take coincidences), post them here.

Just confirmed I did an install on a friends HP laptop that has an Intel Dual Core processor and 2 gigs of ram and used the same 6.49mb picture and it worked fine no out of ram content aware issues. So I am thinking it may be the AMD processor or chipset issue.

It is not an AMD issue as I am using an Intel i7 processor, 4GB RAM, 3 Hard disk drives (2 x 1.5TB and 1 x 2TB HDD's) windows 7 Ultimate and have same issue. I bought CS5 for this feature and am trying to modify a 50MB file shot on a 5D MKII. You would think if CS5 had 1.5GB memory allocated and it had 1TB of HDD as a swap file it should be able to manage a small 50MB file......but no......VERY ANNOYING. And yes I have tried all the suggestions above and then some. NO luck. Adobe PLEASE FIX THIS!

I really don't think its a real memory issue I mean if machines with only 2 gigs of memory are doing the same file. I did try with one of my larger 5d mark II photos and it worked fine on the intel dual core laptop with 2 gigs. There has to be something that throwing that error that associated with all these machines that are having problems because its not really at out of memory error it can't be because of the specs of some of these machines in comparison to what machines its working on.

I have (had) this problem on a dual core machine (E6850).
I disabled openGL - problem still there. Then re-enabled openGL - problem fixed. I'm pretty sure I didn't make any other changes in between. Haven't had the problem again.

So the person who posted about disabling the OpenGL may have the answer. Now mine did not work the way he said was to disable it and restart and then enabling again and restarting. I tried it that way and it was a no go. However when I disabled OpenGL and tried using the same picture it worked. When I enable it though it goes back to the same error.
The AMD desktop machines both have Nvidia Geforce chipset. One has a 9400 and the other a 9600. Maybe the Nvidia chipset is the issue. So people who are experiencing this problem trying disabling the OpenGl and test it out. It should work and this resolved my problems on the machines it did not work on.

Update : So figuring it was a OpenGL issue I downloaded the latest nvidia drivers for my computer and rebooted. They were version 197.45 WHQL. I then went to the performace tab and turned OpenGL back on and tried it and it didn't work, so then I clicked on the advanced setting button under GPU settings and changed the mode from normal to basic. After doing this it not works and no error msg. I did try switching back to normal and advanced and both of those setting through the error. Also you do not have to restart after changing the mode. I did it both way and it didn't matter when I was testing but it is not needed. Hope this helps. The only issue I have seen is maybe so slowness in rendering with the GPU on basic but nothing too critcal.

Update again:
Well more issues came up with the idea of putting Open GL in basic mode. So everything was working fine until I did a refine edge routiine which worked and then did the content aware fill and error of not having enough RAM to fill came up like before. So back to square one. I just did it again with OpenGL turned completely off and did the refine edge and then content aware fill and it worked fine.
BTW - All this testing I have been doing is on a AMD 64 X2 With geforce vide card 9600 running 4 gigs and Windows Vista Premium.

Thanks for the information Storm -- hopefully the CAF engineers can figure this out quickly.
Sorry for the hassle. (sigh. 5000+ beta testers, and there's always something that gets missed. sigh again.)

Chris,
It happens with all beta testing something is always missed. Hopefully this issue has been isolated in the OpenGL routine and maybe has to do with nvidia GPU's, At least for now the workaround is to turn off GL. I have been working on CS5 for a few hours now with various different pictures sizes and using refine edge and content aware and some other tools to see if that RAM error comes up but so far its working fine. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

On my machine I run Intel Core 2 Duo 2,67 GHz processor, with 4 GB RAM memory on-board, however CS5 gives me ..there is not enough memory... error on reasonably sized files. So this problem shows not only on AMD but Intel as well.

It seems so that after some check with different configs on my Intel Core 2 Duo 2,76 (4 GB RAM) following settings seem to solve the issue (at least for the time being):
Cache levels: 6
Cache Tile Size 1024K
Enable OpenGL Drawing unchecked

Later, have disabled OpenGL because of suspicion
of making my drop-down menus flicker.

So has anyone had this problem with a dual-core processor (AMD or Intel)?
Or does it only arise with quad-core?
And is it only on 32-bit Windows, or does it happen on 64-bit Windows too?
(I don't have a problem, with 64-bit Windows and a dual-core Intel CPU.)

Here are my test runs on this problem.
Machines that experienced problem
AMD Athlon 64 X2 desktop running on windows vista 32 bit with 4 gigs of ram
AMD Athlon 64 X2 laptop running 32 windows vista with 4 gigs of ram.
AMD Phenom II X4 desktop running 32 bit windows vista with 4 gigs of ram
Machines that did not have the problem
Lenovo laptop Intel Dual core laptop with 2 gigs of ram running vista 32 bit
Hp laptop Intel Dual core laptop with 2 gigs of ram running vista 32 bit.
I do have a friend who I am seeing sunday who has a new hp I7 with 6 gigs of ram on 64 bit and running windows 7. So I will see if it works on that one. This is a really weird problem.
