Curves not working in LAB Color Space

Community Beginner ,
Jan 20, 2025 Jan 20, 2025

I had a chat with tech support about a week or two ago about an issue that came up with Curves. This issue is still there after re-installing Photoshop today as tech support had suggested.

Problem:
When working in LAB Color Space the Curves Adjustment label is greyed out and I cannot access it.
I haved used this for many years and it appears to have stopped working a few updates ago.

*Screenshot attached in Word.

Thank You,
Patrick Kavanagh.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

I see it too, it’s strange that Curves isn’t available as an adjustment layer from the Layers panel in Lab mode.

I found a workaround…but there’s something strange about that too. It does work if you add the Curves adjustment layer from the menus (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves) instead of the Layer panel. So it can be done, but for some reason is not working in the Layers panel.

Photoshop 26.2 Lab mode Curves not available except in menu.gif

Image > Adjustments > Curves also still works in Lab, but that’s the destructive version of the adjustment, not an adjustment layer.

A moderator should move this thread to the Bugs section.

@Conrad_C  Is this happening with documents created from the outset in LAB mode?

I just changed a document from RGB to LAB and was able to add curves layers from Layers panel, Adjustments panel, and menu.  I am using Windows 11.  We don't get to see what platform the OP is using when Keith moves it.

[EDIT] I see you are using a Mac.

I’m on a Mac. I just started a new document and set it to Lab mode. At first I thought it might be because it was 16 bits per channel, but Curves was still dimmed after I changed the document to 8bpc.

So maybe it’s a Mac thing?

I am on a PC. Thanks for looking in to this as I not familiar with the inner workings of these programs.

This is a known and acknowledged bug. We've had a ton of posts about it.

It will get fixed. In the meantime everything still works from the Adjustments panel, or from the menu Layer > New Adjustment Layer. So you can still use these adjustment layers in Lab or CMYK.
