Question

Decontaminate colours tool not working

When I open my image, it is the only layer I have and it has a lock symbol next to it.

I can then select lasso tool>select and mask>and then I have the option to select and use the decontaminate colours tool.

However if I add a new layer behind it and paint it black. Lock/unlock my image I am trying to cut something out of, the decontamination tool is unavailable and I can not use it. No matter what I have tried to do the only way I can use decontaminate is by just by having the image as my only layer but I need a black background for decontaminate to work on this image.

How do I fix this?

Hi

I'm trying to understand your steps. I think you are doing what I've set out below but can you please confirm this is the case and where you see it going wrong

1. You open a layer with a background

2. You unlock the layer

3. You put a new black layer underneath your image layer

4. With your image layer highlighted you are making a quick selection

5. You are opening Select and Mask and adjusting/refining your selection

6. You are clicking on Decontaminate Colors in the Output settings and saving to a new layer with mask and hitting OK

7. That should give you a copy of your layer, decontaminated, and with a mask. Decontamination alters pixels hence it needs to save as a new layer. Your original layer will be turned off so you will see your image against your black fill layer.

If you are doing exactly this and it is not working please let us know where it changes for you

Note : As an aside, I tend not to use decontaminate colours. Brushing colour onto a new layer, clipped to the masked image and set to colour blending mode works much better in that it is controllable.
