Difference between auto blending and stacking modes in Photoshop

I do a lot of focus stacking when i shoot landscapes and combine the images in Photoshop using auto align and auto blend features. Can someone explain the difference between auto blend and using one of the stacking modes (mean, median etc)? Will i get better results using one of the blending modes?
