For now with your older GPU, go to Preferences > Technology Previews > Enable "Deactivate Native Canvas" > Restart Photoshop

I don't use Windows, so I'll tag Expert @D Fosse who has been recommending a GPU that supports DirectX 12.

Well, yes, any of the Nvidia RTX 30-series or the newer RTX 40-series. They should all work splendidly.

The range goes from the basic and inexpensive 3050 to the rather eye-watering 3090. Speed and performance reflects the price - basically, you get what you pay for. For general Photoshop use, the sweet spot is probably 3060 /4060. I have a 3060, and it handles everything in Photoshop and Lightroom very well and very efficiently.

This is a good time to buy. I got mine a year ago, and already it costs about 25% less than when I bought it.

Note that if retrofitting this to an existing computer, you need to make sure there is a separate PCIe-cable from the power supply to the card. It needs more power than it gets directly from the motherboard PCIe-connector. Any decent power supply will have an outlet for this, but you may need to rummage through your drawers to find the cable 😉 The connector will be marked "PCIe". It also requires a 650W power supply minimum.
