Disc access extremely slow on mac mini m2 pro

Saving files, using 2nd party filters, opening files from Bridge.  All of these actions, and more, work extremely slow on a brand new mac mini m2 pro chipped machine.  I am running the newest versions of Photoshop and have updated my mac IOS to the very latest version.  I do save all my work to external hard drives and these are connected to thunderbolt 4 ports.  

I have tried all the troubleshooting steps online, this forum, etc.  All persmissions, driver updates, computer will not shut down hard drives, etc. have been made.  I'm at a loss at what to try next.  At this point I do a save, or save as, and it takes up to 2 minutes to do so.  Running filters sometimes stalls for a minute or two to start up or complete an action.

Hi @michaelu89506689 what filters specifically are you running? Are they M1 compatible or do you have to run in Rosetta mode (which definintely slows everything down)?

Second on your external HD - are they properly formatted to AFPS Journaled? If they are EXFat (Windows) Ventura will be slower read/writing to them.

I am running Topaz and DxO filters, all are M1 compatible.  None of these filters are running in Rosetta.  Disc format is AFPS on all external discs.

My first attempt was to download the Amphetamine app and use it. It kind of worked but in the end did not. The only solution I have found is to restart the computer when I know I'm going to have a disc intensive session, which means a lot of photo editing. I do this each time I know I will use disc operations a lot. Nothing else works.......I'm hoping someday that Apple steps up and fixes this major, major issue. Until then this has become a 'Windows-like' issue and by that I mean you have to reboot, in this case restart, to make your computer work. I had hoped when I switched to Mac years ago to never face issues like this created by the developer/manufacturer. Hope that helps....and good luck!

Thanks for the info Michael. I've got several long conversations with Apple yesterday. It seems that they are not aware of any problems regarding M2 and Photoshop, on the otherside they told me that the situation is not normal at all. Finally they thought that it could be due to a hardware problem and asked me to send the Mac back for inspection which i did not do. I think that Adobe has a similar problem with the M2 chip than they had earlier with the M1 chip and that finally it will be up to Adobe to try to solve the problem?  I often work with files larger than 2 GB and it takes me some 30 seconds to open them and more that 2 miunutes to save a file larger than 2 GB. My old  late 2015 Mac took 10 respectively 20 seconds for the same actions. I guess that we will have to wait until Adobe comes with a solution. I think that Adobe is aware of the problems but sadly they do not communicate it to the users

First check if you have file compression on! (and maybe you didn't before).

Compression will increase open/save times enormously, especially if the file has a few layers. 10 seconds can easily become two minutes!

This isn't about disk access, but simply encoding/packaging the data. It's all in the CPU, it's all math.

For PSD compression is turned off in Preferences > File Handling, for TIFF it's a separate dialog.

Same here, I've never had compression on. In my case I can actually watch, and hear, the disc spinning up or down. The disc sets idle for up to two minutes sometimes while waiting for a save, open or even on some occasions for a filter window to open. Sounds like maybe Adobe needs to put some work in also though this behavior isn't strictly happening during photoshop use.

I'd run the disks through full diagnostics, something's wrong there. What kind of interface - are these internal hard-wired disks, or external, or network?

If there's a problem in Photoshop code, I've never seen it or heard about it. I've never had anything but instant saves and opens.

Both internal SSD and external HDD have been checked several times and both seem to be ok.

Same here. I've run every available diagnostic on the internal hard drive, external hard drive, changed all cabling, double checked power supplies and on and on. After several months of trying to diagnose this I feel I've tried all possible hardware/software scenarios and come up short.

I've also been trying to find an answer to why my (barely) 2 month old M2 Pro Mac Mini is experiencing similar issues concerning my external drives (usb-c). About 25% of the time, when saving out of Photoshop, Premiere, and Logic Pro, my computer freezes up, taking about 20 seconds to access the external drives. It also happen when I click play on a timeline where the footage or audio is being accessed off an external drive. Frequently, I'll be working off a specific drive for hours, but still experience stalling when accessing it via a finder window. I click on the drive icon and then wait half a minute for any files to appear. It's been to frustrating that I stop using Spotlight to locate files.

I had the Genius Bar ran their diagnostics test within the first month, but they said everything was fine. They only help they could provide was advising that I switch to Safari instead of Chrome because it's less taxing on the computer. They also suggested that I purchase a very expen$ive, proprietary USB cable.

I'm not sure what to do, but I had no issue using these external drives in a much more demanding way for years on my previous 2017 iMac.

You should never work directly off an external drive. I know, in an ideal world it should work without problems, but in the real world it doesn't always.

Treat an external drive as a storage warehouse. For working, move it over to your internal hard-wired disk(s), then move it back when finished.

Wish I could report that I've found a cure this.......I have not. I finally bit the bullet and and slowly (as I can afford it) am switching over to solid state storage. Adobe does not even acknowledge this as a problem so my hope for a solution has drained away. I started the switch over with the drive most used and am working my way through them. Prices do keep dropping so eventually things will even out. Luckily my back up raid drive just runs at night so I don't have any work slow downs associated with that process. Sorry I don't have better news.
