Displace using PSB or larger PSD file?

I've been searching all over, and haven't been able to find any answers to my issue, so thanks in advance for any help at all.

I'm working on what will be a large poster and need to use a displace filter. Unfortunately, it only allows me to open PSD files, but my file is well over the 2GB limit due to it's scale. Short of significantly decreasing the quality of the image, is there any way to use a PSB file or some other workaround that I could use?

Never run into that limit, but that's pretty big for a displacement map. Is you displacement file flattened? If it doesn't have any colors, have you tried using grayscale to cut the file size down?

I would try to flatten it. The reason I asked if it has colors, is that colors do affect the way the displacement direction, but only with the red/cyan and magenta channels, and the colors have to be pretty saturated to be noticed.

They are very desaturated colors, so it should be okay in that case. It's still running the action, so I'll let you know if it works.

Never used this filter. Such a question is a suggestion. And if you split your Displace file into 2-4 fragments and do the same with the layer and apply a filter to each fragment? Will it work?

Unfortunately, I don't think so. If flattening it causes issues, I'll give it a shot though.

    Thanks

Have you turned off "compatibility" for your psd file? If not, it can reduce the size by exactly half.

Yes, I did try that, but it was still too large. It gets it closer though, so it is a good option as well.

    Thanks

Thanks Chuck. Trust me, it's definitely not the first issue I've run into due to it's file size.

It's part of an action that I bought, so it isn't letting me flatten it, though now that I think about it, I might be able to stop the action midway through, flatten the image, and then restart the action. It seems extremely obvious in retrospect, but for some reason, my brain always seems to go straight for the most complicated solutions. I'll go try it, and post back when I know if it works or not. It could take a little while though (everything does with this project. Haha.)

Also, in answer to your other question, it does have colors.

    Thanks again.
