Displacement maps

Is there a way to use the DM (displacement maps) when the "Maximize PSD... File Compatibility" is set to "Never"?!

If your saving a file for use as a dispacement map, flatten the file before saving and you won't have to use

Maximize PSD... File Compatibility.

Maximize Compatibility saves a composite (flattened) image along with the layers of your document.

I knew this one, but I didn't know DM works with flattened PSD file. The difference between amateur and professional!
