Do you have a video card that works with Photoshop CC and the Oil Paint Filter?

I've upgraded my video card to a GT710 which shows as a supported card on Adobe's site.

Photoshop graphics processor (GPU) card FAQ

The problem is the card does not work with the Oil paint filter even though according to Nvidia it has everything needed and Adobe lists it as supported.  No one (not Adobe or Nvidia) can tell me why it does not work. The only reply I get is to buy a different card.  SMH. My response was polite but simple. I am not going to play musical video cards until I find one that magically works---Not unless Nvidia will let me return, at their expense, all the cards that Adobe says might work and don't.  Adobe does have a get-out-of-jail free card which is a small paragraph stating that the cards should work but may not work with all features. ( I am paraphrasing)  They just don't list which ones don't have all the features and which ones do.

Anyway,  since I can't get a straight answer about what is causing the problem or which cards definitely work I figured I would ask the community.

Can we get a list of people using Photoshop CC 2018 or 2019, who can fully use the oil paint filter, and the model of video card they are using?

I am actually seeing this problem across all the forums and video card suppliers. This site, as well as Nvidia and Amd, have similar questions.

Thanks

Thanks, Ged

I've done all of what you suggested and a lot more.  I used  several versions of photoshop 2015, 17, 18, and 19.  Fresh installs of multiple drivers dated over the last year, flashed my bios with an updated version, etc.   and chatted with Adobe and Nvidia several times. No joy.  Here is my sys info in case someone sees something obvious.  At this point I think its time to play hit and miss with video cards.   This version of photoshop is yet again another fresh install which is why you will see only 2 launches. Still the same problem.  Oh, and I have Win 10 Pro 64 bit  8gb ram i7 processor

Hi

I don't see anything wrong with your system info, I have a GTX660 2GB card and have never had any issues with it in any version of Photoshop and a lesser AMD 1GB GPU on my work PC and that works fine to.

Try deleting the Photoshop preferences file from this location

C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2018\Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Settings

Have you tried logging onto the PC with different Windows user profile.

No, my on board graphics card isn't good enough.  I'll have to upgrade to something else.  Maybe it is just the GT-710 but I can't get a definitive answer as to why nor can I get a definitive answer on any cards.  Nvidia won't stick their neck out and tell me which cards will work.

In addition to Ged's suggestion of a clean install, I'd also strongly recommend unchecking all the additional components in the installer. You don't need any of them, all you need is the base driver.

There isn't much Adobe can say about this. It works if the driver works. The problem is that the drivers are developed with one thing only in mind - to get the latest games to work. And do you really expect game developers to stick to all specifications? Of course not.

So it's easy to imagine NVidia/AMD cutting corners. Yeah, "Extreme Violence 2" works for now - that's the main thing. Let's fix it properly next month, if we have time. In the meantime, Photoshop crashes and who cares.

FWIW, there are video card lines not driven by the gaming market - NVidia Quadro and, presumably, AMD Radeon Pro.

Yes, I am looking at those cards. The problem is that I can't get Nvidia to give me a straight answer about which cards will work. Their techs have suggest the Quadro but couldn't tell me if they will 100% work. So, I am back to making a guess, buying a card, and crossing my fingers.  I am currently looking at the Radeon line and waiting for an answer from AMD about its specifications. The card needs to support open CL. Unfortunately,  neither AMD or Nvidia plainly state which cards or models numbers support that feature.

And I don't expect you ever will. They are all supposed to work, so what can they say? When they don't, it's bugs, not card model.

I have a Quadro P600 and haven't seen as much as a hint of a problem. Everything has worked reliably since day one. This is entry-level as Quadros go, and not particularly expensive.

The one thing I can't get to work is 30 bit display, but I suspect that was broken by a Windows update. AFAIK nobody has that working at this time.

Perfect.  I was looking at the quadro P600  or the p400   Nice to know that the p600 works for you no problem.  I am not too worried about the 30 bit.  If I can get open CL and the oil paint filter then great.

Thanks for the input.

Oil paint works perfectly well here on an NVidia GTX1080.

LATEST

Yes, the P600 seems currently one of the best deals on the market.

And an update to my post above - with the new 411.63 driver, 30 bit works again. So I'll probably hang on to this driver for a while.
