Double-Click object in PSP, Camera Raw Won't Allow Any Changes to Image

Community Beginner ,

Hi All,

I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution.  Problem started about a month ago - when I double-click an object in Photoshop, Camera Raw opens as normal but a progress bar opens over the image (says "Camera Raw Filter").  The progress never advances or moves no matter how much time goes by, it always shows about 10% done with whatever it's trying to do.  It won't let me adjust any image settings or even use the cancel button on the progress bar.  The only thing I can do is hit cancel in the camera raw interface and it requires hitting it several times before it returns me to PSP.

I've updated all apps, tested this on dozens of different images, turned "use graphics processor" off, changed scratch disks, etc. all with the same results.  I'm under serious deadlines for an important client and it's really causing a lot of problems!  Has anyone had similar issues or heard of this before??

-  If I give it a long time, it won't even let me cancel out of anything & I have to force quit).

-  If I go through this process several times, usually it will let me change image settings in camera raw if I'm working on an original object.  If it was a regular image and then converted to an object, it will always show this progress bar and never allow changes no matter how many times I back out and start again.

-  Size of PSP doc has no effect.

-  There have been no major changes to my system except upgrading to the latest version of Photoshop in the last month & I'm not sure if that's when the issues began or not.
-  PSP (v19.1.3) on my laptop works fine.

(System:  OSX 10.12.6, Photoshop CC v19.1.5, Mac Pro late 2013, 16gb ram, many TB's of scratch disk space)

Thanks for any help.

Hi Eugenio,

They are Canon raw files that have been opened as smart objects from Bridge into PSP.  All the issues happen when I try to edit smart objects (of any kind) from within PSP by double-clicking and opening camera raw.  Editing in camera raw from Bridge alone works fine but I'm bringing many smart object images together for a composite and need to be able bring them together in a single doc and still access camera raw editing on each of of the images.  There's never been a problem - I've been doing this for as long as smart objects have been in PSP.

Does that answer the question?

If I double-click any smart object like the layer selected below, the camera raw interface opens as normal but then the camera raw progress bar pops up like it's working on something - it never progresses nor am I able to effect the camera raw controls or even use the cancel button on the progress bar.

This particular smart object has been transformed in PSP but even single layer, unedited raw objects have had this same issue detailed below for a month.

Many Thanks,

John

John, did you ever find a reason for this happening... and hopefully a magical fix for it?

I have the same thing happening...

Hey Bob,

I still haven't found or heard of a solution to this and it's still happening regularly (usually when I'm under a deadline and don't have time to waste)!  Incredibly frustrating that Photoshop is actually getting in the way of editing images.  Sorry to hear that you're dealing with the same issues.  Please let me know if you find a solution!

Many thanks,

John

Thanks John,

Isn't it always the way when a deadline is rushing at light speed toward you!

I managed to get around the issue by trashing photoshop prefs and then increasing the cache size in Photoshop camera Raw prefs (to 90GB), and switching out where the cache is saved to an external drive.

I also turned off the 'Use Graphics Processor' check box too. (again in photoshop, camera raw prefs)

I also updated to the latest Camera Raw version. (i did this first)

I'm not entirely sure that any of these things actually had anything to do with fixing it, but so far so good.... fingers crossed.

Hope you get it sorted.

Bob

Yes! - always seems to happen the most when there's a deadline...  I'll try those tweaks.  I think I've done them all except for trashing prefs, but I should have thought of that.  Hopefully I'll get the same results as you have.

Thanks for your help,

John
