Drag and Dropped files now center on mouse instead of canvas

Community Beginner ,
Oct 19, 2017 Oct 19, 2017

I've just updated to Photoshop CC 2018, and in previous versions when dragging and dropping images onto an open document the files would be placed centered within the canvas. Since the update the images are now placed in the document centered on the mouse cursor, partially or fully outside of the canvas.

I realize I could center the layers to the background after the fact, but that's an extra step in a process I do several times a day at work.

I'm assuming there must be a new setting to toggle the centering on placement, but I can't find it. Any insight would be much appreciated.

I am also experiencing this. It's incredibly annoying since most of my workflow is based around dragging images into open files.

I am also having this issue. I was using CC 2017 yesterday, dragging a file from a folder and dropped it on top of an image already open in PS and it would center to the canvas. Installed CC 2018 and now doing the same process has the image center to my cursor upon dropping. Hopefully this is a bug that will be resolved soon.

I just showed this to one of the PS project managers. Not sure what's going on with it.

Just to let you know, you can copy and paste the file, and it will center it.

I'm not sure if this is a Mac only feature, but on PC I am unable to paste files into a Photoshop after copying them from the Windows File Explorer.

Yea, I just tried it on a Mac. Will have to try on my windows machine when I get back to it. But the project manager said that they did add copy and paste feature for layers.

This did not work on my PC so must be a MAC feature.

this is incredibly annoying. I believe this is a bug. for those of you who got links with the team, please pass this on. this sabotages some workflows tremendously.

my workaround for now when placing multiple photos is:

1. drag them to all my canves. as soon as one image is placed, press enter until I finish them all no matter where they are now.

2. select all - Ctrl+A so the canvas area is selected

3. select all layers - Alt+Ctrl+A

4. Align vertical centers, Align Horizontal centers using the tools menu

Just to let you know, you can copy and paste the file, and it will center it.

  • copy pasting does NOT work if you copy from finder/explorer by highlighting the file/files, copy and pasting to the document.
  • copy pasting from outside PS works if you "copy image" i.e if the image is in some viewer - this was always a feature.
  • copy pasting layers works from document to document in PS. it can be centered using paste in place Ctrl+Shift+V.

*sorry for the off topic but I feel this is a big deal: on the way discovered that finally in 2018, paste without formatting is a feature in PS. now we need this in Ae and Ai...

and a new shortcut was born! I can live without a shortcut for vanishing point.

What image viewers are supposed to support copy and paste? It does not work from ACDC, or of course from explorer even if you are viewing from the windows photo viewer.

google chrome for instance:

I use it all the time when copying images from the web instead of downloading them. and as I recall, Win7 photo viewer had this option too but not sure. can't recall all the cases where right click on the image copies it to the clipboard.

best workaround is just 2 steps drag to target as per usual then use smart guides to snap to center.

oh yeah forgot about smart guides.

I think it's 3 steps for multiple images

1. drag and drop

2.select all layers Ctrl+Alt+A

3. when smart guides are active hold Ctrl and drag to center and snap Horizontal and Vertical centers

another problem with the copy pasta workaround is that this does not create smart objects.

I've just discovered this issue as well (Mac user). The only workaound at the moment that I have found that places the image as a smart object in the center is to drag the file/s from the finder and drop them into the photoshop document tab instead of the open canvas.

This is easier than having to align the images in my opinion.

I'm glad you were able to find a partial solution on Mac. It seems like this doesn't work on PC, unfortunately. Dropping the images onto the document tab does nothing. The images don't get placed or opened up in new documents either.

Well done! You figured it out.

This is the fix for now- verified that it works on Mac OS. Just drag the files you want add to the TAB of the open document window and they will be placed centered.

Yes, this is a bug. There's currently no way to get centered files from either the finder or bridge using drag and drop. This behavior changed from all previous versions of Ps. I've filed the bug and Adobe says they're looking into it.

Temporary workaround ... Shift drag between already opened documents still works ... So just drag from outside to open as new, then shift drag between them ...I know, it's not what we need, but keeps the flow ...

also, another issue to keep in mind  when you shift/drag between docs...for some reason ignores transparent pixels and centers not fully transparent ones...(sarcasm-ON)--maybe not a bug / a new feature?--(sarcasm-OFF)...

It does center on PC too, but before, dragging from Bridge and dropping on the open window, it used to center AND resize to fit the longest dimension all in one swoop. From what I can see, this workaround centers only, but leaves at original size. It's something, but not enough I can use this version yet.
