That is correct. If you blur a sharp object then hard edges and corners will look softer. So, 90 degree corners will become rounded. The soft shadow is just showing the same effect.

I don't think this is working correctly. Drop shadow is also giving me a shadow around the whole object, instead of "dropping."

Increase the Distance setting to move the shadow away from the object. The direction is set by the light angle setting.
