Question

Dual Brush Settings

I create licensed abstacts and abstract landscapes images for clients.  My clients are always most interested in "new" looks.  Something "different."  I have many brushes by Kyle, Arville, Adamis, Grut and others.  Most of the brushes I use are dual brushes.

I have started experimenting with creating new brushes (dual) that produce unique looks.  Sometimes it works, more often I create a throwaway brush.

I have 2 questions:

1. The brush settings tab showing an icon and a number is not exactly intuitive.  Each icon does have a name that is visable by letting the mouse curser hover over the icon.  For instance my attachment show a brush (blue box) that is "kyle drag mixed greys." I would like to be able to assign a name that I recognize to the brush icons that I find most usefull. Possible?

2.  I would also like to be able to move the icons to different positions.  For instance, move my most useful brush icons to the top of the list, or, do some kind of sort.  Is that possible?

Thanks

Trevor.Dennis.......You incorrectly read my post.  I did not ask about making changes to the BRUSHES TAB.  I asked about making changes to the BRUSH SETTINGS tab.  I am sure you know the difference.

Andreas Resch........I believe your are correct. It is not doable.  At least it is not doable in the current versions of Photoshop.  As for Brusherator,  I recall looking into it probably a couple years ago.  Will check it out again.  I currently use Brushbox (since 2016).  It works but it does have a few bugs.  But the bugs are not deal breakers.  Derrick about a year ago mentioned a new update was coming.  Never happened.  Perhaps he has lost interest in Bushbox.

You can do a lot of wild things with Brusherator. Here's what my basic set looks like. It took me while to get it to that look though. But it can be done. And the developer always was very supportive as well, which is nice of course.

Thanks. I downloaded the Brusherator manual.  Will review it.  Also sent an email to Derrick asking about a new version of BrushBox.  Will see if he responds.

And if you look for a great brush management, I can recommend Brusherator (is on gumroad). It will not help you with the brush tips though.

I fear you are out of luck here at the moment. I remember having the same issues when I was still painting in Photoshop. The "hunt" for brushtip thumbnails always was a bit annoying. In Clip Studio Paint there's an option to assign favorites to brush tips as well as tags. That makes it a bit easier. There you also have 3 types of display options for the tips. A similar system would certainly be helpful in PS. But unfortunalely the brush editor in Photoshop is very outdated at this point and I haven't heard about any plans to make this any better. They shifted their focus away from illustrators and more back towards photo editing - not in a great way though.

It all sounds doable.  Well most of it.

To reposition, you can simply drag them.  Select the brush and right click open the brush panel, and drag the preset to the required position.

To rename, select the preset and right click, but I am fairly sure that closing that group and reopening it will cause that preset to to revert to its original name.

So best to create your own favourites group and drag the presets you use the most to that group.  Rename and position them as required.  When done open the Brushes panel (not the right click brush panel) and export the new brush group.  That will create a .abr file so you can delete the group and append it again with all the presets in it.

Or select the preset closest to what you want, and fine tune it in Brush settings, and save it as a new preset with the options below checked.

Remember that if you add to your new brush group, then you need to export the group again.

There are third party brush management plugins available with Brush Box being probably the best.  It was a lot better than the standard brush engine when it caame out, but Photoshop caught up in 2017, so I am not sure how relevant it is now.

(I have licence for it but no longer use it if that tells you anything.)
