Duplicate layer vs new via copy

I have this huge document with a little more than a thousand layers. When I duplicate a layer it takes a couple seconds but new via copy is instant. Is there any difference between the two and if not why do they have the two options at all?

Thanks,

Alex

In relation to smart objects I believe the difference is that a copy will allow all instances to be changed at once. Duplicating means you're creating multiple instances so you would have to edit each one individually.

Also Duplicate layer allows you to copy a layer into a different file, while new via copy is only within the current file.

Hope this helps

I should add this video by Julienne Kost as an illustration of the two commands in relation to Smart Objects.

Duplicate vs Create New Smart Object via Copy in Photoshop « Julieanne Kost's Blog

However I forgot Duplicate Layer will allow you to chose any open image file to copy the Layer to, and Layer via Copy is only in the same document.
