Duplicating layers without the confirmation screen?

Hi all, when I was using Photoshop 6 I had a lot of keyboard shortcuts set up, one of which was F4 to duplicate whichever layer was highlighted. It also served to duplicate any selected element to a new layer.

I'm trying to make PS 2023 behave in the same way, but so far all I have managed to achieve is to set up a shortcut whereby F4 does indeed duplicate the layer, but it brings up an annoying confirmation screen every single time. It really interrupts the flow.

As far as duplicating just a selected element to a new layer is concerned, it simply doesn't do that at all, the entire layer is duplicated, and the selection just sits there doing nothing.

Any ideas? At least to make the confirmation screen go away?

cmd / cntrl + j will do exactly what you are trying to do with no dialog box...

Ah, that's great thank you. I've started using it although I do find that particular combination awkward to manage on the keyboard, especially when it is right in front of my graphics tablet. How would I go about assigning F4 or F5 to the current cmd/J so that I only need to hot one key? Possible?
