Duplicating smart object with different

Can I duplicate a smart object in a way where, when I update the photo in the first layer, both layers update the photo, but one is inverted and one isn't?

I tried creating a smart object via copy, but when I changed the photo, it didn't update the next. I want it to update the photo and flip it horizontally. Is there a way to do this?

Just use Ctrl+J to duplicate the smart object then Edit >Transform>Flip horizontal on the copy.

Opening (double click) and updating the contents of the smart object will update the original and flipped copy when you save the smart object

Thank you! I tried doing that earlier, but the original layer also flipped. I'm not sure what I did wrong but thank you so much!!

Do you think you might have had both layers selected when you used Free Transform?

You sshould be able to flip a copied SO without affecting the original.
