Duplication of layer with an opacity change

Hello,

I am trying to duplicate a group of two layers that are a frequency separation edit which I have reduced the opacity on by 50%.  I would like the new group to be an exact copy but now at 100% opacity so that I can merge them and have a new layer at 100% opacity to effect further.

I swear until today I have been doing this exact process and the duplication would look just like the previous layer but be at 100% opactity every time.  But today, the new layer's opacity is the same as the layer being duplicated, 50%, and it adds some of the edit that was reduced back onto the image.  When I push opacity up to 100% the full edit that I reduced of the layer underneath is back.  What am I missing?

Thank you for telling me that I'm wrong.  But even if I am remembering incorrectly, how do I achieve this?  I still need to merge that new group into a layer and have it be 100% opacity.  Is there a way to do this?  Thank you

before you duplicate: Select All>Copy Merged>Paste or use shift-opt-cmd-e to merge up to a new layer.

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

Here are screen shots of what I am describing, Photoshop 2023, first is the image with the full edit turned off:

Next, the full edit which I would like to tone down by decreasing the opacity:

Next this is the group at 50% opacity, which I would like to duplicate exactly as is, to a new group at 100% opacity so that I can merge it and effect it fully without it being at 50%:

Then I duplicate that group of two layers by right-clicking on the group:

And then here is the result:

The new group is at 50% opacity, not 100%.  So if I merge it, the resulting layer is still 50%, so whatever effect I put on is only 50%.  Also, it is subtle, but some of the edit is back on the image.  Then here is that new group turned up to 100%, which is just the full edit again:
