When you draw from center using the Alt/Option key the cursor does not stay in the center but rather acts the same as if not using the Alt/Option key. Center is where the cursor first was when clicking and drawing out the Elliptical Marquee using Alt/Option.

you know where the cursor is when you dont press alt/option? well thats where the cursor is when i PRESS alt/option. All Alt/option does is make the marquee double the size. Hopefully these two screen shots make it clear, the smaller one is without alt/ option, the bigger one is WITH alt/option pressed

Check the option bar setting, set selectio style to NORMAL, it could be set to fixed ratio .

if that doesn't work, reset the tool preset or photoshop preferences settings

Interesting. It was on normal, of i change it to fixed ratio, same problem, BUT if i change it to fixed size, then pressing alt option key makes the cross hairs go to the centre.

If, after making the Selectiion are you choosing Select > Transform Selection?

Do you then hold down the Option key and drag one of the handles so that as you change the size and/or shape of the seletion it maintains an unmoving center mark

I can do that as you say. But i cant make the initial selection with the elliptical marquee from the centre, it always starts from outside the circle or ellipse.

Some things to check:

  • What do you hold down first: the Option key or the mouse?
  • Which do you release first: the Option key or the mouse?
  • Is anything else already selected? If it is, the Option key will remove from that Selection. Go to Select > Deselect (Cmd+D) to confirm.

Please check your keyboard. This setting does work. Are you holding down any other keys at the same time? Are you holding down Alt/Option until after you let go of the mouse (you should)?

Thanks for the quick reply.

No other keys. Ive tried it a hundred times, on two different keyboards, and on the keyboard on the macbook pro.

Doesnt matter when i press Alt/option before or after or either alt option key, it never goes from the centre
