Error Msg: Could not open "file name with.tif" because program error.

I use PS 21.0.3 version (one at work and personal at home).  I create tif files, touch them up with clone stamp, add text, use line for scales.  Have done hundreds of such plates in past.  Suddenly, when I try to open a file to resize, etc. I get the program error: Could not open "plate 7.tif" because program error.  Some files open and some get this error.  What is going on with those files that will not open?  It happens on both home and work PC computers, each using a different cloud subscription (home and university).

It is frustrating because sometimes it takes an hour or two to prepare a file/image, then to load to resize, etc., this error occurs and the file is debunct and unusable!!

Could you have misnamed the files and they are actually psds or jpgs etc.?

If so you could need to correct their file extensions.

If the files are indeed corrupted then that may be irreversible, but try to open them in Preview (if you are on Mac) and resaving them in a different file format.

What have you done for general trouble-shooting so far?

I was able to take the tif into acrobat and it opened as a pdf.  Was then able to save it as a jpg.  The jpg opened into PS just fine, which allowed me to save it as a tif!  By doing this process, it "flattened my image" and I lost the layers (no big deal).  Seems there was some problem with layers created by using the line and type tools?!  What do you think caused this?

Thanks for your help.
