Hey there!

I'm trying to export layers to files via the native Photoshop menu "File > Export > Layers to files...".

But Photoshop exports only one file and then gives me a message:

"Error: The requested action requires that the target document is the frontmost document."

Hardware - MacAir 2020 M1

Software -  MacOs 13.2.1 (22D68)
Adobe Photoshop Version: 24.1.1 20230112.r.238 4bbfa7a arm64.

How can I fix this? Thanks!

I had this error occur and solved it with these steps.
1. A smart object was being edited in Illustrator that wasn't saved. I saved the smart object and closed it in Illustrator.

2. Save the Photoshop file, re-open it, and try the export again.

Hi @paul.os

Thanks for reaching out.

Since when are you noticing this? If you try a different export workflow, does this same thing happen?

Try updating Photoshop to the latest version; check here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/uptodate.html#:~:text=How%20do%20I%20check%20for,See%20Update%20Creative%20Cloud%20apps.

Let us know if that helps.

I have the same problem with a completely updated Creative Cloud. Any thoughts?

Do you know what to do if that still doesn't work?

After a few Photoshop updates this error did not occur anymore. Haven't seen it since. I am currently on version 25.3.1. At the time I switched to Photoshop Beta, that didn't have this very annoying problem. Now I am back at 'normal' Photoshop. Good luck!
