Hi Michael,

That’s a new feature that has been in Illustrator for a while. It’s dummy text and it’s selected. You can start typing on top of it or hit delete first if you prefer. It can also be turned off in Preferences.

Hi Michael,

Since we answered very differently, please confirm: were you talking about this “Lorem ipsum dolor” text that appears every time you click with the Type tool now or something else?

Jane look at the background thumbnail in the layers palette.  Where is all the Green and black junk?  This is also a Photoshop question they are using Photoshop on a mac not AI. They wan to create a text box. They need to check with Apple to see if there is any new software hpdates for their Mac. I think it may be their Mac's Display Device driver.

I do not know what Mac OS version they are using.  There seems to be many problems with Photoshop operation on Mojave.

Should look more like this if you leave the fill preference set

I tried the fix too recommended in the preferences->performance tab and that did not work. Still tons of green and black crap all over. I know you asked. I am using Mac OS High Sierra.
