Exporting Hyperlinks with Photoshop

New Here ,
Mar 05, 2018 Mar 05, 2018

Hi,

I used the slice tool to add hyperlinks to images in Photoshop. How do I export the project so the links will be clickable? I first exported it as a JPEG, but it didn't work.

Per web standards, the links cannot be carried in the JPEG images. In any web page, when you click on an image, the link is in the HTML code of the web page.

You can export the links that you entered into the Set Slice Options dialog box for a selected slice, but the only way to do it is not useful in a typical web production workflow. Photoshop isn't capable of creating and exporting hyperlinks. You need to take the sliced images into a program like Dreamweaver or Muse to add hyperlinks.

When you use the Save for Web command, set up your JPEG settings, and click Save, pay attention to the Save Optimized As dialog box that appears next. Look at the bottom of that dialog box for the Format pop-up menu. It probably says "Images Only"; if it does, that's why you didn't get the links. Change the Format menu to "HTML and Images" and Photoshop will export both the JPEG images and an HTML web page containing the hyperlinks.

The big problem with this is that it only works seamlessly if you are designing the entire web page in Photoshop and you're willing to that HTML page code as is. If you are designing the web page in another program, it usually isn't practical to use the HTML slice code from Photoshop unless you're willing to merge it into the web page's HTML by hand. If that isn't a good option, it's a waste of time to add the slice links in Photoshop.

Instead, go ahead and use the Slice tool in Photoshop, but don't bother entering anything into the Set Slice Options dialog box. Just export the image slices (set that Format menu to "Images Only"), reassemble the slices in the program where you are building the actual web pages, and apply the image slice links in that program.

Again, this is not a limitation of Photoshop. Every other image program must work this way. Links on web pages images are always applied at the HTML level; it isn't possible for a web image to include a link in its own file.
