I am trying to cut a triangular section from a photo using Photoshop Release 21.1.2 and I cant get past the stage of placing the triangle.  I cant find a way to cut the selected portion and save it.  I would welcome a crystal clear, step by step guide.   Thanks!

Follow these steps exactly

1. Open your image.

2. Go to menu Image > Mode and change the mode to RGB colour.

3. Click on the little lock on the layer in the layers panel (the name will change from "Background" to "Layer 0")

4. Go to menu Select > Subject (some "marching ants" will appear around the triangle)

5. Go to menu Layer >Layer Mask >Reveal selection

You now have a mask around your triangle which makes the areas masked in black transparent.

If you want to save it with that transparency use PNG or PSD or TIFF. Do not use jpeg or you will lose the transparency

Copy & paste to a new image or invert the selection and delete the outsides. Start by actually reading the online help on how to work with selections and all that jazz...

Sorry, I clicked on 'correct answer' by mistake.  What I need is for someone to kindly crop this photo so that only the triangle sign remains.  I will be here all day if I have to work it out from the guides;  nothing I try works!

If that is on layer that  only has pixel content in that triangle area.  A Ctrl+Click on the layer content thumbnail  in the layers palette will select the layer triangle content.  Follow that with menu image crop.  Waring the document will be crop all layer will have content outside rectangle crop area discarded.  Document have rectangle canvases. The document will be cropped to the bounds of the triangle.
