My lasso tool in photoshop is not replacing. It makes the selection grey. Does enyone knows what is going wrong?

What version of Photoshop are you using?

The Lasso Tool in itself should neither replace nor fill with gray but create a Selection so what are you actually doing?
Which Layer is selected, what are the settings for whatever you are doing, …?
Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?
