File saving. Why Adobe, Why????

Why does Adobe keep [removed] with workflow? Now it's back to NOT being able to save a file as a JPG???? So, I spend 20 minutes editing and then need to click through a ridiculous rodeo of mouse clicks to get a JPG saved for my print? Why???? Why create 12 extra steps when "Save As" should just allow for a freaking JPG to be saved????? This is SO freaking stupid. ;(

The "why" is because Apple made a change in their API, leaving Adobe to come up with another solution.

As of 22.4.1, you can use Save a Copy to find png, jpg, pdf, etc.

As of 22.4.2 you can revert to the previous behavior in Preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options:

Enable Legacy Save As
Do not append Copy to filename

A quick history rundown: I don't know if you remember, but direct save to jpeg hasn't always been there. It was introduced, with some fanfare, in Photoshop CS5 in 2010. This was a hack that allowed saving out a stripped copy directly from the Save dialog.

Before that, you couldn't save to jpeg at all, unless the file already complied with the jpeg specification: 8 bit depth, no layers, no transparency, no alpha channels. One flat 8 bit array of pixels, that's all. There was no Save A Copy back then. You just had to make the file fit into the jpeg spec.

Then Apple changed all the rules, as they like to do. The jpeg-hack introduced in CS5 wouldn't work in MacOS anymore.

So Adobe came up with Save A Copy as a workaround. It was the best they could do at the time. Later they found a better way that actually mimics the old behavior, "legacy save as" (only this time with some caveats that you need to watch out for, which is why it can't be the default behavior).

The huge mistake Adobe did with this, was that they tried to sell Save A Copy as a feature, while in reality it was a desperate rescue operation. I bet that if they could travel back to 2010, they wouldn't have introduced it in the first place. Look where it got them (and all they wanted to do was make customers happy).
