File Size issues and a performance problem

I started in LR and selected Edit in PS (V23.0.2) I used the select subject then clicked on select and mask and in the process started using the refine edge brush but noted there was a unusal delay from the time when I brushed over an area to the time when the brushed area responded to where I brushed.  It did not seem to matter what brush I used there was a noticeable delay of several seconds before the brushed area responded. This has not happened to me before so I was not sure what was going on until I happened to notice the file size in the lower left corner of PS was over 241M indicating to me this file had somehow grown from the 41M file I started with in LR.  In the past when I compared file sizes it was never near what I am now seeing.

I attributed the slow respons to fact that since I was working on Layer 1, a copy of the background which meant the total file size was now doubled to over 480M.

In the past when I have made lots of edits with lots of layers response times increased but not like what I am seeing now.  I seem to remember that when I first open a file in PS without doing anything the file size was the same as LR not 4 times larger!

I use a I9 processor on W11 with 64GB of memory so for me to see a noticeable delay is somewhat unusual.  Any Ideas?

This is the metadata from LR the Pixel demensions are the same in LR and PS

This is the metadata from PS when the file opens and no edits or layers have been added

This is perfectly normal.

A raw file is one single channel at 14 bit depth.

Demosaiced and processed, the RGB file is three channels at 16 bit depth. So it's several times bigger.

If you then save out to a compressed format like jpeg, it shrinks again, to perhaps just a couple of MB.

All at the same number of pixels.

What you say makes sense but like I stated this is not something I have noticed before so I plan to watch this a little closer and see I can see anything else that would explain the brush delay when using the refine edge tool.  Normally when I use this tool the edges clean up almost instantly but now I see almost a 5 second delay.
