Forced Save a Copy in Photoshop

Could an Adobe Photoshop rep please let me know the thought process here?

Why the forced "Save a Copy" feature in the Photoshop save as dialog box? I am uncertain why it was implemented that you need to click an extra button every time you want to save a non-layered file, but the fact that it automatically tacks on "copy" at the end of the file name causing me to have to remove it every single time I wish to save a jpg is aggravating.

Hi @joelshoemaker

The change was implemented because Apple made changes caused a bug and forced Photoshop to adapt.

Have you reverted to the previous behavior in Preferences > File Handling > File Saving Options?

  • Enable Legacy Save As
  • Do not append Copy to filename

I had not. Thank you for your assistance! Still slightly aggravating that it was chosen to make this the default, but I suppose functioning saves are better than buggy saves.

Its the default because we would be snowed under with complaints about people saving over their files. We already see that with how saving to pdf works. Save should be bulletproof even if its more work.

Look in Preferences. There's a checkbox to remove "copy".

There's also a checkbox to revert entirely to the old behavior as it was ever since CS5, when direct save to jpeg was first introduced.
