Hello

I have a problem with video exporting from Photoshop CC, the colors are washed out. I tried to find what is the problem and it looks like it is a H.264 gamma bug. Every single video I export, from whatever video editor program has the same issue. I tried Photoshop, which i used in the past and had no problems, Davinci Resolve, Filmorama and the problem remains. I would like to stick with my PS  for video editing (i know it is not dedicated video editor) but it serves my neeeds well, but need to fix this gama problem. I´m on PC using Windows 10. Can you help me please? Thank you

Roman

Sorry for late answer, had some health issues, spent few days in hospital. Davescm thank´s for that link, but there is no final solution for pc. I googled and found some instructions how to solve this problem via nVidia Control Panel but it just boosted contrast for every video but the problem remains, and even untouched videos are overcontrasted. D Fosse I also chcenged the endpoins in nVidia control panel, did not help. So , if there is anyone who can help, please ....

I'm way out of my depths when it comes to video, but the difference between these two is that the camera version clips the high and low ends. The Photoshop version actually has the full dynamic range. They are otherwise identical and there is no gamma shift.

Isn't there something with 16-245 being set as endpoints somewhere in the video world? Rec.709?

This one has been puzzling me, since you said your monitor is sRGB.

I had a bit look around and found this. It is old (2010) but may help depending on the player you are using.

The QuickTime Gamma Bug | vitrolite

It suggests there is a bug in the Quicktime player which impacts video encoded with H.264 and looks like a gamma change. This ties in with Dag's observation that is black to white compression rather than an actual gamma shift. The symptoms are exactly as described and would explain the earlier comments that other editing packages are giving the same result.

It also suggests some workarounds.

What is the color space of your file before rendering: sRGB? Do you have color managed checked? If you do try unchecking it.

Gamma Shifts are inherent in many CoDecs, but the Adobe H.264 CoDec should take care of it. Without knowing exact settings, including color management stuff, it's impossible to really figure this out. My gut feeling is that you are using a specific non-standard sRGB monitor profile, but not correctly using CM in your apps, so they don't compensate for it and when they do in their preview functions, the files still come out crooked because most media players don't have CM and will not be aware of your "crooked" monito settings. Somewhere in there is your problem, no doubt.
