We just got brand new systems at work less than a month ago and this event has happened twice since then. When using Photoshop CS5 Extended and using Gaussian blur the file becomes blocky and all layers as well as their masks become corrupted with these blocks. Can anyone help or is there any advice?
Here are my system specs...
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: 6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 12
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 6.4 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: MP51.007F.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.39f11
SMC Version (processor tray): 1.39f11

Ok, try disabling all third party plugins and try again.
After that, try disabling the extension plugins, and try again.
If this was a widespread problem, I think we'd be hearing about it from more users.
So my guess is that it is something to do with your system or configuration.

I have no problems with Gaussian Blur and I haven’t heard any complaints on this from my colleagues either.

Hi all,
I'm just posting this to let everyone know that I am a bit behind on answering e-mails. I just responded to Amy's e-mail and I have one or two left in my inbox that I haven't gotten to yet. I know this is a very frustrating problem, and we need to get this fixed for all of you, but I am not as available in the short term to answer e-mails and do Connect sessions (I thought I mentioned this in a previous post -- apologies if I didn't).
Anyway, thanks for being patient -- I know this has taken a long time to figure out.

For those people who cant understand why this hasnt been sorted, this is a problem affects a very small percentage of people and in order for Adobe to figure out the problem someone needs TO BE ABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM, but no one can.
From my point of view the corruption seems to be totally random. We've had it happen on 5 machines out of 15. It has reoccured on 2 machines a few times in the last 6 months but thats it. We're packaging designers so layers, masks and blur are things we use every day. From our point of view there seems to be no logic to why it happens.
For this reason you cant really change your work flow to avoid it, the incidents we've experienced are months apart. The only thing you can do is save a copy every now and a again so you dont lose a whole days work.
The common elements seem to be guassian blur and a few layers with masks. I have a feeling that has something to do with the machines being used as in the majority of cases it doesnt affect a whole company or if it does I bet thet bought their machines at the same time.
Lastly once it happens thats it, there's no way back, make a cup of coffee and except the reality that your going to be redoing work you've just done.

All we know at this point is that it only happens on Mac, only in CS5/5.1, and only to a small percentage of people. It does seem to be related to certain machines somehow, but so far there isn't a specific thing that all these machines have in common (that other machines don't).
One more question that I don't think I've asked yet -- when applying Gaussian Blur, are you applying it as a Smart Filter, or just to regular layers?

On a regular layer so far.

In both cases I have encountered the problem, it has been when I was re-adjusting the size of the Gaussian blur applied to a Smart Object that has transparency. Jeanne, I've sent specific detailed information and logs to you directly vie email.

Of course I have still the same problem. But my suspicion ist time machine and/or dropbox. Sometimes I have 2 weeks no problems and suddenly the problems is destroing my whole day.
If the problem starts again, can all of you guys check your time machine and/or dropbox status? Is it running? Is the problem stopping then you stop your time machine backup or your dropbox-connection?
That would be interesting.

Seems to occur for me when many layer 50+, with many masks and posibley when using effects. Recently when it happened Open GL was on.

Hi,
There haven't been any updates in here from Adobe staff since Feb. Just wondered if there was any further progress on this issue?
Cheers
Dan

Hello - i dont belive Flash is the problem. I´ve seen the issue on 2 different machines, both without flash on it.

This is driving me crazy. Like others I've been saving multiple versions of layered files, but I just lost a couple hours work on a file I've been working on for many days - I was only about 10 minutes from completion! Aargh. It occurrs randomly when applying gausian blur to regular (or any) layer. I have no 3rd party plug-ins or utilities installed with photoshop. Using CS5 on a Mac Pro4,1 (Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running OS 10.6.8. This has been going on for about a year. Totally bites.

Working in CS6, Mac 10.6.8, Adjusting brightness contrass hue ex. happend again.
As I adusted layer PSD slowly deletes all color till it blacks out....Clicking back in history PSD does not remember that layer at all.
Anyone have an updat on this issue?

MacPro, OS X 10.6.8 fully updated with CS 5.5. I have 6 Displays connected with 3 VideoCards

Would Adobe be so kind as to give us an update?....It is not just CS 5.1 Happens in CS6.
Some update would be apriciated.

I can confirm it happens on the CS6 Beta.
I've never had dropbox OR Timemachine running, FWIW.

We have not seen that happen at all in CS6.
All we've seen corruption wise in CS6 is disk errors and video card driver bugs.

I can report that I've seen it with CS6 too (corruption knocking blocky 'holes' through mutiple layers). On a late 2011 macbook pro. Was NOT using Gaussian Blur at the time.

Then you're looking at something completely different.
Please don't confuse other issues with this specific issue (GBlur as a smart filter causing image corruption).

No I'm not.
The corruption was identical to types displayed on this thread and files I've seen before. And it is not just being caused by Gaussuian Blur. This page of the thread alone has two cases of corruption from other causes (posts 162 & 156). I'm sorry I can't give more info but I was working on a freelance mac at the time.

The corruption showed here looks like any kind of image corruption - including video card driver bugs.
If it doesn't involve GBlur / USM / HighPass applied as a Smart Filter - then it belongs in a different topic so we can figure out what you're seeing.

Data corruption - inappropriate data written in tile-like fashion into one or more image planes - would look like what's being described here.
Chris, given your comment your mindset may be that you suspect something in the implementation of the Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur function is causing it. I suspect that this is not that kind of problem, but that the failure is only indirectly related to Gaussian Blur.
For example, what if it's a pointer getting screwed up and data being written into image planes where it's not supposed to go? I could imagine that display driver glitches (or, indeed, glitches in any other part of any code running in the process) could cause such a thing to happen anywhere in Photoshop's memory space. I've seen OpenGL implementation problems do exactly that, and the problems just vanish with a display driver update and no other changes to the code.
Around the time of Windows 7's initial release, I fought for months a problem where using a specific pen with a specific pattern was causing the GDI code to write data randomly into my address space.
My point is that the root cause could be anywhere (and could even be multiple root causes). Everything has to work perfectly, including the drivers and the operating system, all the time to avoid data corruption.
The real reason for something like this and other persistent multi-version problems (such as the Help popping up) could be that the general memory management structure of Photoshop, or even of an executable in general, allows such corruption.
