Gradient adjustment [Fill] layer granular control

Is there a way, that I'm not seeing, to have more granular control over a gradient adjustment layer? the controls that are there are very limiting and makes it difficult to control. The standard gradient tool does what I need but defeats the purpose of the adjustment layer.

That is a Gradient Fill Layer. If you double click on the Gradient Fill Layer (not the mask) so that the Gradient Fill dialogue box opens, you can drag the gradient around using the move tool over the canvas.

If you double-click on the gradient adjustment thumbnail (not the layer mask thumbnail) in the Layers panel, you can reopen the Gradient Fill dialog.

 

Or you could add a new layer, apply a standard gradient, and use a blend mode to keep the application of the gradient non-destructive.

    The new gradient tool is unintuitive and very beta. I think I can see how it's going to output, then I get this (Quick export as JPG). trying to 'fix' this is next to useless, I ended up brushing in a layer instead. Why did you break what what working OK, despite the 'tweaks' to the Default grads?

    Hi

    Can you confirm exactly which tool you are using, as there is no Gradient Adjustment Layer.

     

    There is:

    The Gradient Map adjustment layer which maps the image values into the gradient. Finer control can be gained by double clicking the gradient in the properties panel which brings up the gradient editor. Of course it does not have the directional controls as it is mapping image values using teh gradient, rather than drawing out a gradient.

    There is also the gradient fill layer which does draw out a gradient in a similar way to the gradient tool works. Double clicking the gradient opens the gradient editor.

      So basically, I want to be able to reposition the gradient like you can if you are using the basic gradient tool.

        

      I'm trying to use the gradient adjustment layer as a mask on an object below

       

      but the controls don't allow for you to reposition where the gradient falls on the object
