Gradient overlay in blending options on a color fill layer always turns white

I'm trying to put a simple gradient over a solid color fill layer. I've seen videos that explain this very well.

When I follow step for step what the video is doing, I get a different dialogue box for gradient overlay, and it turns whatever color I have to white. My steps are:

1.   in the layers panel I right click my color fill layer and choose blending options

2. In the layer style dialogue box that appears I choose gradient overlay.

simple right? My color turns white and I have no idea why
