I describe how I made a custom 16-level halftone at the bottom of this blog post.

It's a little tedious, but here are the results (possibly NSFW)

When you make a pattern as a harftone screen the size of the pattern that makes up that screen is the same all over just in different tones. This is not stictly a harftone screen. Can anybody help what is harftone screen.

Photoshop can make harftone paths in different shapes. There is an option called custum pattern in photoshop which can convert it to Bitmap defining a pattern beforehand. But in case of Bitmap you get the option of dot/line but can't chose any custom shape. So the picture of harftone path is still not clear ,may be some one can help us.

I'm looking for help in this area as well. When you make a pattern as a harftone screen the size of the pattern that makes up that screen is the same all over just in different tones. This is not stictly a harftone screen. The object that makes up the pattern should the the same tone (Black), just in different sizes. I would really like some one to come though on this one as I've quizzed a few other designers who all say they've tryed but could'nt figure it out.

> When you make a pattern as a harftone screen

Is this really a question about the Photoshop SDK?

Does anyone know of a way to create your own custom halftone pattern in Photoshop?

e.g. When converting to a bitmap you get the option of dot/line etc but you can't choose any custom shapes (I want to use an asterisk). You can use a pattern but it doesn't produce the same effect.

Does anyone know of a way to do this or have any links to tutorials?

Photoshop (recent versions, anyway) does that already. When converting to Bitmap mode choose "Custom Pattern" as the method. Of course you'll have to define a pattern beforehand. And if you're looking for multiple color halftones/screens you'll have to treat each color as a separate file (and merge them again later, if necessary).

I think that is what you're asking..?
