Hi lrobbin,
You may delete Photoshop CS5 from your computer without affecting the functionality of Photoshop CS6.
If you're no longer using the application and only working with Photoshop CS6, it is good to remove previously installed versions.
Please refer this article to know how to remove Photoshop CS5: Uninstall Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 or Creative Suite 5
Let us know if that helps.
Thanks,
Akash

I'm always of idea to keep CS5 or any previous version as a spare. For example some mishap causes CS6 to fail and you have a deadline. Then the few GB disk space taken up by CS5 is worth it.

Now - I'm think CS6 is stable version and you don't need to keept previous for safety reason

Do a search for CS6 in this forum and then tell me it is stable enough. CS6 is stable until something crashes it, sometimes hours from a deadline. Not to say CS5 won't, but backup is good.

Thanks, everyone.
To backup (and at the same gain some space on my mac air), do I simple move CS5 to an external hard drive?

No, running CS5 off an external drive is not possible. Possible to install CS5 on an external drive?
If you can't free up space any other way, go for the uninstall.

I didn't to mean to run CS5 on an external HDD. I meant to park it there to give me more space on my mac, and, if I needed it for some reason later , it would be there for me to move back. But I don't mean to beat a dead horse in this discussion.
