Hope I can find a bit of help here! I've been doing this pop art inspired work on some concert photos that requires me to use the torn edges filter on in the filter gallery. It was working just fine for months, but all of a sudden, every time I click on torn edges, it just turns the entire image black and I cannot adjust it out. This happens with several of the other options as well (bas relief, charcoal, graphic pen, halftone pattern, photocopy, plaster, reticulation and stamp), but it notably doesn't happen with options that come out slightly lighter, nor does it happen with any of the other filters in general. I tried adjusting the exposure of imagines, and even used a few that were specifically brighter daytime photos and got the same result. Can anyone tell me what could possibly be going on? I tried Googling a solution, but I've found absolutely nothing. Any tips would be amazing!
(I've included some screenshots of what I'm talking about - it's so hard to explain it, so I hope they make things clear!)

Here is how your screenshot looks like when using charcoal filter
When looking at your screenshots it seems that filters on the right side are dimmed out. Maybe because focus is not at window. Have you tried to reset preferences what can be solution for weird behaviour Preferences in Photoshop (adobe.com)

the Filter Gallery often uses Foreground/Background colors for the effects, so make sure you have those default colors loaded.
