Once again, thanks so much to everyone.  I learned a lot from you.

Two things:

1.  This may be an apple issue.  I noticed new type in text docs was also coming up grey.

2.  What works somewhat in PSD, now is using the color picker that appears at the top of the frame next to type (see screenshot).  When I open a new file, type still frequently comes in grey, but when I change that color picker, type will stay black for the duration of working in that file.

The screenshot shows the location of that c

Have you tried Photoshop 2022?  IMO it is a better Photoshop version the Photoshop 2021 version 22.5.4 the current version of it,   Try resetting your Photoshop Preferences when Photoshop starts working incorrectly also install Photoshop versions 23.1 and 22.5.4

Thanks for getting back quickly!

Photoshop is becoming more and more glitchy.   Nearly every time I use it

a new bug pops up.

I didn't reset prefs because a ton of past glitches will pop back in to reset.

I hate to think about the new hells that await with newer versions.

I will definitely go on and take your suggestion if necessary.

Thank you again.

If  you zoom in, really high and place the eyedropper over it (set for 1x1), what RGB values do you see?

What color space is the document?

Hi-  but I'm in RGB, 8 bits.

The eyedropper takes color to mid grey on the color scale.

Color Settings (Command Shift K on Mac, Control Shift K on Win).

That the RGB values show mid gray is useful, at least we know this really is gray and not just previewing incorrectly. They really are gray.

At this point, best approach is trying to reset your preferences.

Try resetting your Photoshop preferences. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings.

(Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder*, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

This action only affects the items found in the preferences dialog box. Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Photoshop Preferences file, including general display options, file-saving options, performance options, cursor options, transparency options, type options, and options for plug‑ins and scratch disks. Brushes (and lots of other setting) are not affected by the above instructions for deleting preferences. You may wish to make a screen capture of the settings in the Preferences dialog to reset them prior to deleting of this file.

*To manually delete Photoshop preferences:
Quit Photoshop.
Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder:
macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
Windows 10: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note:
The user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS. To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see How to access hidden user library files.

Drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe for a back-up of your settings

Thanks!  Unfortunately, I was not prompted to delete anything.  Although the page packed with previous snapshot photoshop files (lightroom library?) is empty.

I can't access the library that you suggest, doing a simple Command F.

Please understand you are dealing with a 'tard, and give a bit more direction on reaching this CS settings folder, so I can trash it.

(It would be interesting to find out exactly why PSD picked this time

to suddenly glitch.)

Hold on, I thought we were discussing Photoshop. Are you having issues with Lightroom Classic or Photoshop?

Photoshop!

I'll probably have to resume this later.

Am working with client now.

You've probably given outstanding help I'll just have to figure it

all out.

Adobe used to make it simple to resolve problems like this.

It is sad that everything has gotten so complicated.

All they concentrate on is marketing!

Your advice has been excellent, and I'll try and sort it out

when I have a chance!
