Help - Lasso tool not showing selection outline when shape is closed :o

I have not used photoshop for a while and am not familar with all the changes however my lasso tool is not working. When i close a shape I am not seeing the 'marching ants' outline. I get some random thin rectangle and flashing dots - so I cannot see what i am selecting. I can't see any setting that would cause this. My regular rectangular selection tool is working fine. See the screen shots, i am making a simple triangle selection and closing it
