HELP! Some brushes not working properly, photoshop 2025

I've been downloading and using third-party brushes from different sources for a few years. This past week, I noticed SOME brushes - particularly but not exclusively halftone brushes - don't work as they are supposed to. I learned how I can tell ahead of time if a brush will not work - the pictured brush tip shape does not match the illustrated brush stroke in the brushes panel. See attached photos for reference.

I tried uninstalling the affected brushes, shutting down photoshop, and reinstalling the brushes, to no avail. Please help? I'm afraid of resetting ALL brushes as I've made some internal custom brushes.

Okay. I was on my own here but I figured it out with the help of a video from one of the brush suppliers. Here is a link to their page about troubleshooting brushes: https://support.truegrittexturesupply.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015131474-My-texture-brushes-looks-nothing-like-they-are-meant-to-How-can-I-fix-this

I run windows. I had to go into my app data and delete the prefs.psp file, and restarted photoshop. The app looks different now and I will take some time to customize it again but all the brushes that weren't working are good now.

In addition to uninstalling brushes, restarting the program and reinstalling the brushes (which did not work), I tried to install an earlier version of PS to see if it was the update which caused the problems. That did not work either
