Hello,

So, I need help to restore a PSD I was working on. Lost unvaluable time and effort...

I know about saving pratices and autosave pratices. Which I do and are on.

(I left my computer to get coffee, when I came back, computer was off. Figured it made an update and turned off, turned it back on, opened photoshop... file seems corrupted. Yes I saved it before leaving my computer, I'm always ctrl+s every step of the way.)

I'm left with this :

Here's was I have so far :

- The original file with now in it only one layer black and red

- Recovered a bunch of "Photoshop TempXXXX" files, for a period of few days back

- Recovered a bunch of "MyFileXXXX.psb" files and a bunch of "psXXX.tmp" files that were along with them, for a period of few days back

I can't seem to open any of the recovered files,  "file type incorrect" either psb, or .tmp turned into psd or psb. I've tried to pass bunch of the into psd file repair software, none of them work. It's like they don't recognize the files.

I don't know what to do left... I have over 10go of recovered file that I can't open for some reason, and i can't believe that in any of them i can't recover any data...

ps: i'm on windows 10, work has been done on photoshop 2022 (i also own the 2023)

Please... could anyone help ? Thanks a lot.

Also, my original file is still 176mo worth of data, which is the correct size it had before too. Can't this be salvaged?

Ouch...

You could try to open a flattened copy: hopd CTRL+ALT+SHIFT as you open the file.

We do need incremental copies when saving. File, file2, etc.

in the mean time: https://www.artstation.com/marketplace/p/3bYW/increment-save-photoshop-script (note that PSDC online files do save earlier versions.)

That's a corrupt file, and file corruption is always caused by failing hardware. Your first priority must be to find out which component is failing. Usually it's a failing drive or bad RAM, but it can also be worn and loose cables and connectors, especially if you use external drives.

In the meantime, back up everything. Don't do any more work until you have full backup at the present state.

There is no point in looking for temp files. They are not in a form that can be read by Photoshop (basically they are just RAM dumps).

Photoshop has Autorecovery, which is crash recovery, not corruption recovery or user error recovery. In that case the file(s) you were working on and had open when Photoshop crashed will open automatically the next time PS is launched. The contents of that folder is deleted in a normal Photoshop shutdown. Again, there is no point in trying to manually search for these files.

Hello,

Alright, it's good to know. I'll do some checkups while i'm at it.

Thanks for detailed description, it's good to know for my education. I couldn't find the differences online

So you're saying it's gone whatever I do ? It's hard to believe that I have so much files and data and can't do nothing with them...
