[HELP] Troubles with frequencies separation

Hello everyone 🙂

I'm editing some photos on photshop and some pictures need frequency separation. I've manually do the whole processe:

- I've copied twice the main layer
- I've applied gaussian blur on the low frequency layer
- for the high frequency: apply image > blending subtract > scale 2 > offset 128

supposedly in the preview area the whole colors gonna be 50% gray and the textures will be highlighted. In this step the first problem happen. The image boarders don't change to 50% gray, they transformt into a weird orange color (image 1). BUT i click ok, in the layers windows i've change the blend mode to "linear light" and the second problem shows off (of course its a consequence of the first one): a kind of gray aura surround the image (image 2).

I'm using the last photshop version. I've tried to repeat this process in the last version and the same problem happen. I've tried to do the process in a bunch off different pictures and in some of them the process works and in some of them the same problem happen.

Why this is happen? What can i do?

Try a frequency separation method that uses a high pass filter instead of apply image for the high frequencies. There are several methods floating around with a quick search, but here is one just in case:

@Stephen Marsh Whoa! This is an incredibly interesting read. I didn't know a conversation about the high pass filter could get so spirited! Some of last posts are spot on, there is a ton of great bits of info in there.

In the realm of landscapes I only use frequency separation on rare occassions. I've never run into the problems they were describing with lost shadow/highlight detail but now I'll have to keep an eye out to see if it pops up.

One way to rule out user error is to use an action created by somebody else who isn't experiencing the same issue:

i've uploaded exemples from different pictures, here is the right image 1. But it doesnt really metters because its exacttly the same problem
