How can I become more proficient with Photoshop?

I'm an all-around artist and content creator. I've always known the basics of graphic design, but never got into the nitty gritty. Such as the psychology behind the design, just a few basic courses in college, and the rest were "advanced classes" where we'd learn how to use Adobe. Step by step in the text book we could basically complete assignments that way. I ended up learning a ton on how to use the tools in Photoshop, however, I never felt like I learned much. Now that I'm trying to apply these fundamentals to my job title, I've forced myself to learn a lot in a limited amount of time.

Is there a way to learn more of these techniques so I can apply them to my technical abilities? What are your favorite tips and tricks?

If you know basic concepts like masking, adjustments, smart objects, filters... then do and repeat, there is nothing else in that process. By doing you are learning, by repeating you will memorize, thats it.

This is great, these are all things I can work on. I just wasn't sure where I could continue to learn at a progressive rate based on where I'm at with my experience. I'm in a job that requires me to apply graphic design skills that I haven't needed before. Thanks for your input! I'll be putting it to the test.

My advice is to learn the tools that are of most use to you.  When you get stuck, use Google, or better still, ask on this forum.  We love to help with Photoshop specific questions.

If you have the time, join in on our SFTW threads.  I think most of us that regularly upload images to those threads have learned heaps.  You have an idea of what you want the image to look like, so you have to work out how to do it.  If you can't work it out ask on this forum.  My favourite questions are the how-to-do-this-effect? threads where  I don't know the answer, because it means I am going to learn something new.

Check out the latest SFTW thread, and please join in.

Yes exactly, I find myself googling something and using there's a nice TUT from Adobe to explain to you step-by-step how to do a certain task. Youtube has also been my best friend with this. And that's great advice, I'm looking to become more engaged with the community, thank you.
