Question

How can I break up the Color/Swatches/Gradient tool panel?

This is probably a dumb question, but how do I break up the tabs in the Color/Swatches/Gradient window? I want to be able to have the color selection bar stacked above swatches, since I go back-and-forth when I'm hunting for the right shade/tint/hue. I've tried the click-and-drag method, but it only lets me rearrange the tab order within the window and won't let me break them up. I can do this in InDesign and Illustrator. So what am I missing?

I'm using the most updated Photoshop 2025 on a Windows 10 computer.

Your only options are what you see in the pop-out menus.

Colour is an area very well supported by extensions.  I don't use any my myself, but you might find something that fits your needs.  LINK

I can't even get the individual tabs to pop out by themselves like you have in your screenshot. I can slide them around but they're stuck in one block and to the side. (I like them on the side, instead of free-floating, so that's not the issue.) This is me trying to pull one or all out of the sidebar:

I can reshuffle a lot of other tabs, like character, adjustments, brushes, and whatnot. It's just weird to me that the color and swatches tabs are locked like that.

I'll check otu the other color features and see if there's anythign that would replace these functions in my workflow. Thanks for the tip.

How are you trying to separate them?

Click-keep clicked the name-field and drag it?
