How can I crop a circle in Photoshop CC without the circle turning white?

I've been following the instructions for cropping a circle in Photoshop CC by holding shift and using left mouse button to draw a circle.  In all the tutorials it creates moving dotted lines around the circular area.  When I try to do it the circle turns white and opaque.  How can I make it still show the photo in the circular area?

I don't know the tutorial, but can it be that you are using the wrong tool? A shape tool than a selection tool?

Hi there,

Could you please share a screenshot of how the cropped cirle looks at your end?
We're here to help, just need more information.

Thank you for replying!  Yes, you are right, I was using the ellipse shape tool instead of the rectangular marquee tool, and that was why it was turning white.  So now I understand about using the right tool.

Is "inverse" maybe selected by mistake? (Select>Inverse)
