I used to press ctrl+s directly replace the jpeg I opened in the old versions of photoshop, but now it come out a PSD save window. I need to click many buttons to save a opened jpeg.

For example, I open a jpeg file and add a water mark on it. I only drag, ctrl+alt+shift+E and ctrl+S, that s all. Or even by an action.

However, now I cannot do it.

What can I do to save a jpeg directly (replace the origainl)?

It's because it is no longer possible to save directly to a file format that does not support the current properties of the file.

This change was actually made by Apple, not Adobe. Photoshop can't do things the operating system doesn't allow.

The jpeg specification does not support:

  • layers
  • 16 bit depth
  • transparency
  • alpha channels

You are making a new layer, so you have to save a copy. Flatten the image and you should be able to just save. Skip the stamp image and go right to flatten. I'm assuming you don't want to save a copy with the layers...

Thank you for your reply.

I already down to only one layer as i did before. Still cannot. this was
after I updated last year.
Is there any setting I can make?

That difference between “one layer” and “only the Background layer” is very important. Look at the example below. Your Layers panel must look like the one on the right if you want to save directly to JPEG. If your Layers panel looks different than the one on the right in any way, it won’t work.

The only layer command that will guarantee only a Background layer is Layer > Flatten Image. The Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E shortcut you are pressing does something else, Stamp Visible I think, which creates a new merged layer in addition to existing layers.

Thank you, It works!

but the key is not its background or not, even it shows  "background", I still cannot save directly.

After I Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E (even there is only a layer), it works!
