I randomly found this image and found this really cool, and I tried to select the character in the center, but I couldn't find a way to select just the character. How can I select it without the background? Thanks.

You may find that making a duplicate layer and applying this unusual curve will help you define not only the middle and darker edges but the pure whites, as well, in creating your selection. The selection may then be used with the original image.
