The logic was would be edit-stroke- select mode - dashed line.
This feature doesn't exist.
How can I stroke a selection with the line tool in dashes instead of a full line?
In the twentyfirst version of Photoshop it is still a huge problem to make a single dashed line. Why why why?

I have the same problem. I can't get a dashed line and I've looked at so many tutorials! I don't have the "stroke" option that it shows. I have Photoshop CS5. Here's a screenshot of what I have when using the pen tool:

»I have Photoshop CS5.«
That’s too old for Shape Layer strokes if I remember correctly.
Sticking with obsolete software means that one cannot take advantage of features implemented in newer versions.

You seem to be mistaken.
And why do you want to apply a Stroke to a Selection instead of a Shape Layer?
Also what does the Line Tool have to do with this?

dneill79,
In photoshop cs5 use the Dotted Strokes layer styles.
