Question

How do disable auto-select "toggie" with the CTRL key?

Hey folks,

I'm on the latest version of Photoshop CC (21.1.2), latest Windows 10. When I'm using the Pencil tool, and accidentally press down Ctrl, it switches to the Move tool & enables auto-select (or if I have auto-select enabled to begin with, begins a rectangular selection.)

This can be annoying because my fingers hover over Ctrl + Z when I work. So I might try to draw a line, and end up moving the whole layer.

Is there any way to disable this behavior? I can't find it in Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts.

Thank you in advance to any responders!

Was this ever resolved? I'm facing this issue currently and I cannot use any shortcuts, which makes it impossible to work on anything.

No real resolution. I was just told that it's a feature. There is a work around in that it only toggles when you are using the selection tool so if you want to use your short cuts select some other tool. Very bothersome and I wish it would magically revert back to the way it was.

Did you ever resolve this?? I've been using ps for 15 years and all of a sudden this started to happen! They're gaslighting me a t support trying to pretend that it's always been like this and I just didn't notice or something

Did you fix this? I use keyboard shortcuts constantly and I don't have access to them suddenly because the control key only toggles the autoselect button!

This is a feature - I use it daily so I don't have to switch tools. You need to work on not accidentally pressing on ctrl.

If I can understand your question correctly then I am affraid that you can not disable that behavior.

SOLUTION: CMD does NOT tick the check-box - if FLIPS it. So, if you tick the checkbox BEFORE pressing CMD, the keypress will invert Auto-select and be UN-selected when used. Voila.
