How do I add artwork to a custom 3D object in Photoshop?

[Moderator moved from Adobe Creative Cloud to Photoshop.]

Hi all,

I'm creating a custom 3d packaging and have finished it in Adobe Photoshop. Unfortunately, I can't add or define my surface areas. I need to export the 3D object into dimensions so I can add my labels/artwork to the different surfaces without it getting distorted.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

I tried it in dimensions but it was completely off (the surfaces chosen for the overlays looks wrong).

because you don't have all the parts... have you got more textures that include the missing pannels?

How do I add the new texture? I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to 3D models and textures so apologies if this sounds amateur.

this tutorial shows how to make selections i.e cut a model up 6293_make-a-selection.mp4

if these files are all you have then I would use Dimension instead of Photoshop because you can edit each pannel as a different decal where as Photoshop will try to save space and use only a single decal... it can be hard to line everything up with just the one

option 1 just import it to Dimension and add a new material... this will flatten the obj one to a single material that you can then add decals to or mix into new shapes

option 2 first unity the obj in Photoshop (makes it a single material) add whatever decal, textures to it before you export it as an Obj... for fine detial work this is the best option but the other one is faster if you don't need it 100%

in Dimension itself you can adjust materials like making one side of a cube invisible to show what is inside the box or perhaps you want it be gold on top but silver on the sides... Photoshop is better at making the uv maps and anytime you want custom shapes like a pyramid with a flat top

So far every time I add a texture I get a engraved look rather than the colour overlay (please see the photo posted for Dave). I've unified the scenes - what are the steps to add the artwork? I tried it in dimensions but it was completely off (the surfaces chosen for the overlays looks wrong).

    Hi

You can add textures to surfaces in Photoshop by clicking on the material then in Properties click the folder symbol next to Diffuse and choose Edit texture. A psb file will open with the material flattened into 2D space. You can add additional layers with your artwork then close and save the psb. The model will update.

If you want to do it in Dimension instead :

In Photoshop select the model and use menu 3D > Export 3D layer. Choose the obj format.

In Dimension use File >Import >3D model

    Hey Dave,

I tried to add a new texture but it just greyed out (looks more like an engraving).

I'd be happy to provide the file if needed. http://

When I edited it in Dimension, the artwork isn't appearing on all sides (side and front).
