How do I change the default "Save As" to JPEG? (PS CC 21.22))

I have lots of files that I've scanned in from documents using a desktop scanner.   The scanner creates JPEGs.   All I do in PS is square up the alignment, crop out the parts I'm not interested in and set the white/black points, and save as a JPEG.    The files are flat with an 8-bit color depth.  Nothing that JPEG can't handle.  But when I do a "Save As" it defaults to trying to save it as a .PSD file.    I have to manually force it to use JPEG (it does not give me any warnings or complaints when I do).

How do I set the default "save as" to JPEG so I can skip that extra step?

Thanks in advance.

Check your crop tool. If it's set to "hide" instead of "delete" cropped pixels, it produces a floating layer which is verboten in the jpeg spec.

Your Layers panel needs to show "Background", not "Layer 0".
