Question

how do I duplicate layers with 'ctl/cmnd + J' hotkey and still get the dialogue box?

When I right click and select duplicate on a layer, I get a convenient dialogue box that allows me to rename the new layer. When I use the hotkey mentioned in my title, I do not get this option. Is there a way to change that?

Thanks for any help given!

Cmd+Opt+J should bring up the display you are looking for.

Thanks Norman,

I tried this out, and it works on layers, but does not work on groups unfortunately.

Hi Nate,

Adding a shortcut for Duplicate Layer (Group) is bringing up the dialog box:

Hi Nate,

If you want the Duplicate Lyet dialog to come up when you hit the keyboard shortcut, you need to click on Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts, then go to the Menu Tab on Top and scroll down to Expand Layer and assign a different key combination to Duplicate Layer (Group) and click on Accept.

Thanks for the response Sahil,

How do I change the keyboard shortcut? I'm only getting options to change its visibility and color, as shown in your picture, and also as what I'm seeing in my version of Photoshop.
