Just a heads up I'm new to this and didn't know what to search to find this out so I'm hoping someone can help me.

I want to be able to properly fit an image onto another but only in a certain place, I hope that makes sense.

Ill upload a picture to help demonstrate what I mean.

In the photo attached I want to be able to put another image ontop of the picture/canvas that Jerry is holding.

Any help is appreciated

It may be necessary to decontaminate the edges (of the record cover and the fingers) and a few Layers to simulate shadows and lighting might help integrating the placed image.

Replacement images should have a 1:1 Aspect ratio.  You can use replace content if all replacements are exactly like the object in the template or your can edit the replacement images into the templates's object if the size are aspect ratios do not match. If the Aspect ratio is not 1:1 some image content will be lost in the composite. The Process can be automated and batched processed.

Thank you both for the detailed responses but I am still a bit confused on how to get the checkerboard pattern first before actually adding my image to it and then how to use the smart objects, if possible do either of you know a video that demonstrates how to do it.

Im sorry my lack of experience has made this harder.

Take one of the images you want to insert and make sure it is square (or at least has the exact same proprtions as all the other images you may want to place).

Convert it to a Smart Object (Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object).

Then invoke Edit > Free Transform and cmd-click, then you can cmd-drag the corner points individually to line up with the »original«.

There can be two edits. Ctrl+T when you create the mockup template to resize rotate and distort the object for the layer object use. Then either replace content or Edit Object when  populating the mockup template.

You double click on the smart object layer's content thumbnail in the Layers palette.  Photoshop will create a temporary work file for the layers object. That will be opened for edit via  the work document extensions associated application.  Most likely either Photoshop,  Adobe Camera RAW or Adobe Illustrator.  All smart object layers are not created the same.  My mockup popping script only support the edit option when object are Photoshop objects.  My scripts will bypass editing smart object layers that have  ACR or Vector object files.  My Scripts are only able to user replace content for smart object layers that have ACR or Vector object.

When you edit or use replace content.  The object size must bt the sames size as the mockup templates smart object layer's object.   The Layers associated object transform is not changed.  The replaced object will be transformed and warped just like the original object in the template. The object may be shared by more than one smart object layers each layer will have a different Object transform and distortion for  the layer's different use of the object.
